The new senior study is fully operational! New furniture, charging stations for everything electronic, bean bags for chilling. We now have the perfect location for year 12 to study for their HSC – did you hear that kids! Over to you!

A lot of people were involved in the final product. We thank them all, staff, students and businesses. We would like to thank the Smidmore family for their wonderful donation, the SRC for theirs, and of course the P&C who supplied the money for the new furniture. Their involvement in this room and their ongoing support for the library as a whole school hub is very much appreciated by the library staff, and the broader school community. Thank you very much.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).
The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.
We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Last week the students of Rose Bay were packed into the Gym for the Annual SRC assembly. There, many students finally got to meet the new principal and deputy principal. The new school principal, Ms Bright originates from the inner west and has made her way eastward, eventually arriving here on the coast. She imparted upon the students her guide to success which involved a lot of smiling and kindness. To continue on that bright theme the school band performed “Walking on Sunshine”, complete with a swaying quartet of singers, the tonic notes of the saxophone and the somehow pre-organised humming that resonated from the Yr7’s on the Mezzanine.

Due to popular demand the RBSC environment team will be placing a second order for SOL reusable glass cups just in time for the Christmas holidays!
SOL reusable coffee cups are hand blown glass cups, equipped with a silicone lid and grip  (has the RBSC environment team logo) which allow your coffee to still taste great. They will be selling for $30 with the option of white or light blue, perfect for a large or regular coffee. They will be available for purchase from C Block staffroom or pay online (instructions below) and pick up from C block staff room.

Last week, 18 intrepid physics students traveled over 1200km in two minibuses to see into space. Mr Smith and Ms Biddle drove the magic school buses to the Dish in Parkes, along the scale model solar system drive and to Siding Springs Observatory. 
Along the way, we all ate a lot of chips and saw a lot of much needed rain in the country.

Last Friday I was lucky enough to be part of the World Guinness Record attempt of the largest mental health interactive awareness lesson. This was an incredible opportunity that our class will be forever grateful to be a part of. During the lesson we were taught about the importance of mental health and how to assist others going through mental illnesses. The strategies we learnt will stay with us forever. Additionally, how many people can say they’ve broken a world record – not many, especially one of this significance. There were 1800 students in that lesson and it was broadcast to schools all around Australia.

The boys and girls open volleyball teams travelled to Olympic Park to compete in a round robin volleyball tournament on Friday November 16. It was an excellent opportunity to play some highly competitive volleyball against some of the best schools.  The teams have been training exceptionally well each Wednesday afternoon and often adding an extra training session in as well.

Congratulations to our Integrated Education Facility (IEF) who recently won 2 awards in the Waverley Garden Award.  IEF & SRC representative Oliver accepted the awards with teachers Kathryn Dobb and Niki McDonald on behalf of IEF students at a ceremony held at Bronte House.  The Waverley Garden Award has been running since 1886.

We know the quality of the relationship between families and schools has a direct impact on student wellbeing and educational outcomes.
There will be times when parents and carers want to ask a question, raise an issue or make a complaint about our schools and it can be hard for families to know where to start. Families have told us that it can be difficult to find the right person to talk to, or don’t know what steps to take to bring an issue to someone’s attention.
A short video, produced in consultation with schools, is helping families find the right person if they have a question or want to raise an issue, make a complaint or provide a compliment. The video encourages families to contact their school or the department early and in a positive way to help resolve any issues together.

Recently, nine girls in Yr 10 went to UNSW for the L’Oreal Australia For Girls in Science forum. During the forum we meet four inspiring women with outstanding achievement in their chosen scientific careers.  These included astronomy, engineering and medicine (a skin specialist and a researcher in influenza). During the forum we learnt some fascinating information on each individual scientific field and what those women do in these fields. For example, we learnt that people with diabetes have an increased risk of death from flu. The astronomer was the sole Australian female NASA employee and they just the other day landed InSight on Mars! After the forum we had a small tour around the UNSW campus, guided by current science students and later had lunch.
It was a great day overall, we left feeling very inspired.
