The best education money can’t buy

For 175 years NSW public schools have prepared the children of today to succeed and build better communities for tomorrow.
Across almost every industry you will see our alumni leading the way, from Reserve Bank governors to High Court judges, experts in health, education, construction and international film and sports stars.
Why are public schools the best choice?
Our public schools offer a comprehensive, tuition-free education that lays the foundation for a lifetime of learning and success. Our students consistently feature as the most successful performers in the NSW HSC and we perform above the national average in NAPLAN results.
In fact, over 50 of our students achieved top positions in the state for their HSC subjects in 2023, a testament to the quality of our education.
With more than 140,000 dedicated staff across 2,200 schools in the state – which includes teachers recognised as some of the best in Australia – our students can

Every day matters

We know that every school day matters for our learners. Thanks to families like yours, we improved school attendance across the state from 85.2% to 88.1% in 2023.
To further improve school attendance this year, we’re providing families with additional resources and support.
Why does attendance matter? Let’s do the maths…
Did you know that if your child misses one day a fortnight, that’s 40 days of school, 4 weeks of lessons, and over one year lost over their school life? Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can impact your child’s learning more than you think.
Be it Mondays, Fridays, school carnivals or sporting days, every day matters when it comes to your child’s learning. Parents should reconsider going on holidays or taking casual days off during the school term.
While school is a place to learn, it’s not just about maths and science. It’s also about providing

HSC disability provisions

Your child may qualify for HSC disability provisions. The provisions can assist students practically, especially when their disability might affect their exam performance. They can support students with learning, psychological or mental health, medical, physical, vision, or hearing needs. The provisions can include access to a reader or writer, extra time or rest breaks and braille papers and/or large-print papers,
Please note that NESA determines a student’s provisions based on how their disability affects their exam performance. If you believe your child is eligible, reach out to their school. They will help you determine your child’s eligibility and provide advice on the evidence required by NESA.
Key dates
Year 10 students with permanent disability can apply for HSC provisions from Term 4.
For students in Years 11 and 12, applications close at the end of Term 1 in the year of their HSC exams.
It is important to start the conversation about disability provisions with your school as early as

Join us online for NSW Aboriginal Languages Week

This week, schools across New South Wales are celebrating the very first NSW Aboriginal Languages Week. The theme is “Languages Alive, Culture Thrives,” and recognises the important role of Aboriginal community organisations and groups in preserving indigenous languages.
You can take part in virtual events like language lessons in Wiradjuri, Dunghutti, and Gumbaynggirr and enjoy a Yinabildanhi fishing story in Gamilaraay. Younger kids can also learn Aboriginal languages with Ninganah No More.
This week is also notable because it marks the Aboriginal Languages Act 2017 becoming a law. It’s a great opportunity to connect with and honour local Aboriginal community groups and organisations dedicated to revitalising their languages.
To learn more about local community events, contact your local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group committee and visit Aboriginal Language Trust.
